NM Fattener: install help

Everything you need to get NM Fattener running. Still stuck after this page? Email tom@noisemasters.eu with your DAW, its version and your operating system.

Why does my computer warn me?

Windows and macOS warn about installers that aren't code-signed yet. Code signing is a paid certificate developers renew every year, and NM Fattener doesn't have one yet. The warning doesn't mean anything was found in the file. It's safe, and the steps below get you past it in under a minute.

Install on Windows

VST3, 64-bit. Works in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig, REAPER and any other VST3 host.

1

Run the Windows-Setup.exe from the download email.

2

Windows shows Windows protected your PC. Click More info.

3

Click Run anyway.

4

Click through the installer. The plugin goes into C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3, the folder every Windows DAW scans.

5

Open your DAW and rescan plugins. Steps for each DAW

Install on Mac

VST3 and AU. Runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, macOS 10.13 or newer.

1

Open the mac.pkg from the download email. macOS says it can't verify the file. Click Done, not Move to Trash.

On older macOS the popup looks a little different and the button says OK. The rest is the same.

2

Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to the message about NM Fattener, click Open Anyway.

The button only shows up for about an hour after you tried to open the file. If it's gone, open the installer again first.

3

Confirm with your password or Touch ID, then click Open Anyway once more. The installer opens.

4

Click through the installer. The VST3 goes into /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and the AU into /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components.

5

Open your DAW and rescan plugins. Steps for each DAW

Not showing up in my DAW

Close and reopen the DAW first: most of them only scan when they start. Still missing? Find yours below.

FL Studio

Options > Manage plugins, then start a scan (Find installed plugins or Find more plugins, depending on the version). NM Fattener appears under Effects.

Ableton Live

Settings > Plug-Ins (Preferences on older versions). Turn on Use VST3 Plug-In System Folders, then click Rescan.

Logic Pro and GarageBand

They use the AU version, under Audio Units > Noise Masters. Missing in Logic? Logic Pro > Settings > Plug-in Manager, select NM Fattener, click Reset & Rescan Selection.

Bitwig Studio

It scans the standard VST3 folder on start. Check that it's listed under Settings > Locations.

Cubase

Studio > VST Plug-in Manager, then rescan.

Studio One

Restart it. Still missing? Options > Locations > VST Plug-ins and reset the blocklist there.

REAPER

Options > Preferences > Plug-ins > VST, then Re-scan.

Pro Tools

There's no AAX version yet, so Pro Tools can't load it for now.

Using it

Put it on a bass channel and turn one knob.

NM Fattener plugin window with numbered markers on FAT, AUTO GAIN, MIX and OUTPUT
1

FAT

Drives the whole chain from one knob. 70% matches my own chain; double-click the knob to jump there.

2

AUTO GAIN

FAT makes the sound louder. Switch this on to keep the level about equal, so you hear the tone, not just more volume.

3

MIX

Blends the fattened sound with your clean bass, phase-matched so it never goes hollow.

4

OUTPUT

Pull it down if the next plugin in your chain gets too much level.

The sub below 120 Hz always stays mono.

Stack two instances for more weight. Watch the level, each one adds some.
